What is Tawaf wida?

What is Farewell tawaf? Have you ever seen a honey bee circulating flowers? Why is the moths attracted towards the light? The philosophers explain these phenomena as an adoration of honey bee and moth towards flower and light. That is how Muslims love the Holy Kaabah-nucleus of Ummah and yearn to circumambulate around it by performing tawaaf. Tawaaf is an expression of true love from the heart of the believer towards his Creator. It is also an essential ritual of the Hajj and constitutes encircling Kaabah seven times.

Tawaf e wida

Tawaf e Wida is the Farewell Tawaf performed by pilgrims at the end of Hajj. The Hajj is bid farewell to the House of Allah SWT before leaving Makkah city. It is the last and an important rite of Hajj that is executed by the non-residents of Makkah before leaving for their home. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH stated about Tawaf e Wida in following words.

“The people were ordered to circumambulate the Kaba as the last thing they should do in Makkah, but an exception is for menstruating women.”

–Bukhari: 1755, Muslim: 1328

This significance of Tawaf e Wida is evident from the above saying of the Last Messenger of Allah.

Obligation of Farewell Tawaf

Tawaf Wida is obligatory on every pilgrim who has traveled to Makkah with the intention of performing Hajj. Only the menstruating women are permitted to leave Makkah without performing this last rite of Hajj. They are not dutiful to perform farewell tawaf, nor they need to pay atonement or redeem anything for not carrying it out.

The residents of Makkah are also excused from executing Tawaf al Wada. This rite of Hajj is compulsory only for the pilgrims who have traveled from outside of Makkah to perform Hajj. If anyone misses this part of Hajj, then he must offer a sacrifice to atone it.

Some pilgrims make stoning their last act of Hajj and do not perform Tawaf al Wada. They go to Makkah, carry out Tawaf while they still need to do stoning of Jamaraat. They travel towards Mina, stone Jamaraat and leave from Makkah. This is a mistake that is done during Hajj and does not suffice farewell Tawaf. Circumambulating the Kaabah must be the last act to do before leaving Makkah. After the farewell tawaf loading the luggage or buying something can be the last activity during the time if one stays at Makkah.
